Casa Anchieta is a historic building that encapsulates different stages in the evolution of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Originally conceived as a single-family home, it was the residence of José de Anchieta and his parents until their departure for Coimbra and, later, Brazil. Over the centuries, the house has undergone various renovations and expansions that have shaped its current appearance.
The most significant intervention took place in 1905, when the architect Mariano Estanga gave the façade a Neoclassical style, replacing the original arrangement of the openings, still visible on the side façade. Inside, elements from different periods are preserved, such as 17th-century structures and the galleries that articulate the courtyard, now restored as the central core of the building.
Following its recent restoration, the Casa Anchieta will house an Interpretation Center and an exhibition space dedicated to highlighting both the history of the building and the figure of Anchieta, emphasizing his humanist dimension and his role as a bridge between cultures. The center is conceived as a meeting place focused on intercultural dialogue, the dissemination of heritage, and the promotion of different peoples, their cultures, and their knowledge.
