Description

This exhibition invites you to reflect on one of the most pressing challenges of our time: our responsibility towards those yet unborn, who will inherit the consequences of our present actions. The Origin of a Global Vision. The idea was conceived by two exceptional figures: Commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau and the then Director-General of UNESCO, Federico Mayor Zaragoza. Alongside them, it is essential to mention Karel Vasak, a renowned international expert and pioneer in the classification of the “generations” of human rights, and Francisco Aznar Vallejo, Professor at the University of La Laguna and director of the UNESCO Chair.

It was thanks to the joint effort of more than thirty experts from twenty-one countries that, on February 26, 1994, the document also known as the La Laguna Declaration was adopted by consensus. They agreed on a text that addressed global problems in a multidisciplinary way, going beyond mere environmental advocacy. In this way, the University of La Laguna became, during the time the meetings lasted, the epicenter of an intellectual movement capable of developing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Future Generations, a purpose that remains relevant today.

We invite you to discover in this exhibition how the work begun in La Laguna became a mandate of universal solidarity.

This exhibition brings together the work of various professionals whose contributions and perspectives make this shared project possible.
