Description
“Written in Stone” provides a scientific view of the rich indigenous archaeological heritage of the Canary Islands, a trail through the most relevant sites of the archipelago that gives visibility to one of the fundamental areas of the history of our region thanks to the work of Professor José Farrujia de la Rosa, who has dedicated a large part of his professional career to research on this area of knowledge.
The rock engravings of the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands deserve to be recognized as integral cultural expressions of the Canary Islands' identity, and their dissemination and promotion are essential for their preservation. This exhibition aims to bring this island cultural heritage closer to the public, reflecting the commitment of the CajaCanarias Foundation to fostering education and training, as well as research; promoting and disseminating culture; and, in general, the progress of Canarian society, as established in its statutes.
The rock art depictions that can be viewed and studied through this exhibition, as well as through its accompanying publication—whether abstract, geometric, figurative, or alphabetic, engraved or painted on the archipelago's rock surfaces—will lead the visitor-reader to an analysis of the cultural contributions of the ancient indigenous people of the Canary Islands, their idiosyncratic foundations, and their anthropological relationship with the Amazigh or North African Berber world. This research will foster an understanding of the historical period spanning from the mid-first millennium BCE, with the arrival of the first settlers to the islands, to the 14th century, when the European conquest began.
In short, “Written in Stone” is essential for a better understanding of the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands.
