Who is Marcel Mettelsiefen?

German filmmaker, photojournalist, and documentary producer, Academy Award nominee, winner of six BAFTA Awards and four Emmy Awards. He is renowned for his humanistic approach and visually striking style in documentary filmmaking. He began his career as a photojournalist, which shaped his visual and narrative vision, leading him to document conflicts and humanitarian crises in places such as Haiti, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, and Latin America. He later established himself as a documentary director, distinguished by his ability to gain intimate access to his subjects and honestly portray the moral, emotional, and political dilemmas of our time. Among her most acclaimed works are Children on the Front Line: Syria (winner of two BAFTAs, two Emmys, and a Grierson Award), Watani: My Homeland (Oscar nominee), In Her Hands (Emmy winner), Children of the Taliban (two BAFTAs), Afghanistan: A Wounded Land (Grimme-Preis and Rose d'Or nominee), and State of Rage: Daughters of the Holy Land (winner of two BAFTAs in 2025). Her work has been broadcast on international platforms such as Netflix, Channel 4, ARD, ZDF, CNN, Al Jazeera, ARTE, Canal+, and PBS's Frontline. In 2023, she founded Duskwater Films, a production company dedicated to creating cinematic documentaries that reveal the human complexity on the margins of power and history.
