The Plaza del Adelantado is the historic, political, social, cultural, and economic center of the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. It takes its name from Alonso Fernández de Lugo, the first Adelantado and conquistador, who built his second residence at one end, where the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena now stands.
Created in the 16th century, this square served as the town's main square, hosting major public events such as festivals, market days, processions, bullfights, and even executions. Originally a dirt esplanade, it was paved in 1798, and in 1843, its interior was redistributed with trees and benches.
The square's most distinctive feature is its central marble fountain, commissioned in Marseille and installed in 1870. It still retains its original layout and is a valuable cultural heritage site in the Canary Islands. Today, the square is surrounded by important buildings such as the Town Hall, the courts, and the Hermitage of San Miguel Arcángel.
