Description

Oaxaca de Juárez, formerly “Antequera of New Spain,” lies at the foot of Monte Albán, a pioneering city in the use of writing, urban planning, and the administration of a multiethnic state. Both sites have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Here, we will explore the contradictions between conservation and (ab)use of biocultural heritage in an impoverished region that relies on tourism and remittances from migrants in this 21st century.
